Developing multi-gigawatt private power grids to meet the demands of next-gen AI infrastructure MoreLess

Fermi America is a Texas-based developer pioneering a next-generation, private electric grid designed to power hyperscale artificial intelligence operations. The company was co-founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Toby Neugebauer, and Mark Harmon. The project, known as the "HyperGrid" campus, is being developed in collaboration with the Texas Tech University System in Amarillo, Texas.

The company's primary initiative is the construction of what is planned to be the world's largest advanced energy and AI campus. This behind-the-meter campus will feature a hybrid energy portfolio, integrating a large nuclear power complex, a major combined-cycle natural gas project, solar power, and battery energy storage. The goal is to deliver up to 11 gigawatts of highly redundant power to support an 18-million-square-foot AI data center campus. The business model focuses on providing a secure, resilient, and massive power supply directly to energy-intensive AI and data center clients, bypassing reliance on the public grid.

On June 18, 2025, Fermi America submitted its Combined License (COL) application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build four Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors. Construction is anticipated to begin following regulatory approval, with the first reactor planned to be operational by 2032. In the interim, the company plans to bring 1 gigawatt of gas-fired generation online by the end of 2026 to support initial AI operations. Additionally, Fermi America has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ASP Isotopes Inc. to explore developing a High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) enrichment facility on-site, positioning the campus as a strategic hub for both clean energy and advanced nuclear fuel.
