About FairX

FairX, operating as LMX Labs, LLC, established itself as a designated contract market regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) before its acquisition by Coinbase in January 2022. The company was founded in 2019 by CEO Neal Brady, Chairman Clifford Lewis, and CTO Harsha Bhat. Brady, a Harvard graduate with an MBA from Columbia, brought prior fintech experience, including founding a trading platform acquired by the CME Group and co-founding ErisX. FairX was created to offer smaller, more accessible futures contracts to active individual investors, launching in June 2021 with backing from firms like Hyde Park Venture Partners, Battery Ventures, TD Ameritrade, and Virtu Financial.

The business operates as a derivatives exchange, generating revenue through transaction fees. Its model is designed to serve active retail traders by offering lower-cost products that require less capital to trade. Before being acquired, FairX had secured partnerships with numerous major online brokerages, including E*Trade, TD Ameritrade, and StoneX, to offer its products. Clearing services were provided by Nodal Clear, a part of the Deutsche Börse Group. The acquisition by Coinbase, valued at approximately $275M, was a strategic move to provide Coinbase with the necessary regulatory infrastructure to offer crypto derivatives to its U.S. customer base.

FairX's product suite was specifically developed for the retail segment. Initially, it offered futures on indices like the Bloomberg US Large Cap Index and the SuperTech Index. A key feature was the introduction of "nano" and "micro" sized futures contracts, which have smaller notional values, lowering the barrier to entry for individual traders. For example, it launched Micro Crude Oil futures, sized at 100 barrels, to provide a more cost-effective way for retail investors to trade the price of crude oil. Following the Coinbase acquisition, the exchange, now known as Coinbase Derivatives Exchange, leveraged FairX's infrastructure to introduce its first crypto derivatives product, Nano Bitcoin futures (BIT), in June 2022. It has since expanded to include Nano Ether futures among other products, all trading around-the-clock.
