About Eyetech Pharmaceuticals

Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company, was co-founded in 2000 by ophthalmologists and researchers Dr. David R. Guyer, Dr. Anthony P. Adamis, and Dr. Samir Patel. The founders leveraged their extensive backgrounds in ophthalmology and vascular biology research to address unmet needs in eye diseases. Dr. Guyer, who served as CEO, was previously a professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Adamis's co-discovery of the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in eye disease was foundational to the company's therapeutic focus.

The company concentrated on developing and commercializing novel treatments for diseases of the retina. Its flagship product, Macugen (pegaptanib sodium), was developed to treat neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Macugen was a first-in-class anti-VEGF therapy, a groundbreaking approach that inhibits the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye. The business model centered on the development and subsequent commercialization of this specialized injectable drug, targeting the market of retinal specialists. Revenue was generated through product sales and strategic partnerships.

A significant milestone was the FDA's "fast track" designation for Macugen, followed by its approval in December 2004, marking the arrival of a new era in pharmacotherapy for wet AMD. To support commercialization, Eyetech entered into a major global collaboration with Pfizer in December 2002, which included co-promotion in the United States and exclusive marketing rights for Pfizer internationally. This partnership involved substantial upfront payments, milestones, and shared development costs. Following the successful launch of Macugen, Eyetech Pharmaceuticals was acquired by OSI Pharmaceuticals in November 2005 for approximately $935 million. However, the market dynamics shifted rapidly with the introduction of more effective anti-VEGF treatments, which led to a significant decline in Macugen's sales. In 2008, former employees purchased the division from OSI, establishing Eyetech Inc. to continue marketing the product. The company's final chapter came in March 2012, when it was acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals (now Bausch Health Companies) for a substantially lower price, reflecting the competitive pressures in the ophthalmology market.
