Extreme E
Gender-equal, sustainable off-road motorsport racing series.
About Extreme E
Extreme E is an international off-road racing series that utilizes electric SUVs to compete in remote, environmentally stressed locations around the globe. The project was initiated in 2018 by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag and former racing driver Gil de Ferran, who envisioned a sport that could highlight the impact of climate change through a compelling, narrative-driven adventure. The series was officially presented to the public in January 2019 in London. The championship's core mission is built on three pillars: Electrification, Environment, and Equality. It mandates that all teams consist of one male and one female driver who share equal driving duties, a unique format in motorsport designed to promote gender equality. Races, known as 'X Prix', are held in locations chosen to raise awareness for specific climate challenges, such as desertification, melting arctic ice, and deforestation. A key component of the series is its Legacy Programmes, which are social and environmental initiatives tailored to each race location to provide lasting positive impact. These projects are guided by an independent Scientific Committee composed of academics from institutions like the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The series began its inaugural season in April 2021. All teams compete using a spec-chassis, the ODYSSEY 21, a 400kw (550hp) electric SUV designed by Spark Racing Technology with a battery produced by Williams Advanced Engineering. While teams use a common package of standardized parts, they can develop their own motor, inverter, and certain exterior bodywork. Logistically, the series utilizes a former Royal Mail ship, the St. Helena, as a floating paddock and mobile hub for transport, accommodation, and research, minimizing the championship's carbon footprint. Signifying a major technological evolution, the series will transition to hydrogen power, rebranding as Extreme H starting in 2025. This new championship will be the world's first hydrogen-powered off-road racing series and is set to become an FIA World Championship in 2026. The Extreme H car will use a hydrogen fuel cell from provider Symbio as the principal energy source, replacing the battery, while retaining the same chassis and powertrain as the ODYSSEY 21. This move aligns with the organization's objective to serve as a testbed for sustainable mobility solutions.
