Healthcare startup that offers a healthcare-at-home marketplace to make booking lab tests easier MoreLess

Examedi is a digital health company operating a healthcare-at-home marketplace in Latin America, connecting patients with medical professionals for a variety of services delivered directly to their homes. The company was founded in 2021 by CEO Ian Lee, CTO Andrés Kemeny, and COO Juan Pablo Zepeda. The idea originated from CEO Ian Lee's personal experience with his father, who struggled with routine diagnostic testing, highlighting a broader need for more accessible healthcare. Initially focused on delivering at-home PCR tests during the COVID-19 pandemic, the founders were driven by the frustration that ordering food online was easier than accessing medical care.

The founders brought diverse and relevant experiences to the venture. Ian Lee, a software engineer, co-founded the tech area of real estate marketplace Houm (YC W21) and dropped out of the University of Waterloo to focus on his entrepreneurial pursuits. Andrés Kemeny, also a software engineer, started programming at 14 and dropped out of his Civil Engineering program to dedicate himself to Examedi. Juan Pablo Zepeda, an industrial engineer, left his Master's program in Optimization to build the logistics infrastructure at Houm, where he managed a large team of freelancers. This collective background in technology and logistics formed the backbone of Examedi's operational model. The company is a graduate of the Y Combinator (S21) accelerator program.

Examedi's business model is centered on providing a more convenient and cost-effective alternative to traditional lab testing. The platform allows patients to schedule appointments 24/7 for services such as blood tests, urine tests, vaccinations, and general checkups. A nurse or lab technician visits the patient's home to collect samples, which are then sent to partner laboratories for processing. Results are delivered to the patient through the company's mobile app, where they can be viewed, downloaded, or shared with a doctor. This model can be up to 80% cheaper than competing services. The company generates revenue by facilitating these at-home medical services. Its clientele includes individual patients seeking convenience and affordability, as well as a B2B-focused solution for other businesses.

Since its inception, Examedi has expanded its service offerings significantly. The platform now includes 24/7 telemedicine consultations without an appointment, assisted telemedicine where a health professional is physically present to assist with a virtual diagnosis, and a range of wellness services like kinesiology, nutrition, and mental health support. In 2023, the company launched its mobile app for scheduling and managing health records, and is experimenting with AI to provide patients with personalized health recommendations based on their test results. After launching in Chile, the company has expanded to Mexico and has a presence in Miami, with plans for further geographic expansion across Latin America. The company secured $17 million in a Series A funding round in June 2022, led by General Catalyst, following a $3.5 million seed round. This funding is aimed at product development and regional growth.
