Etergo

Etergo BV, an automotive company headquartered in Amsterdam, was established in 2014 by co-founders Bart Jacobsz Rosier and Marijn Flipse. The venture originated from a shared vision to accelerate the shift towards sustainable transportation by developing a compelling electric alternative to traditional gasoline scooters. The company's flagship product, the AppScooter, was engineered to address common drawbacks of electric scooters, such as limited range and acceleration.

The AppScooter is a fully electric smart scooter designed for the urban mobility market. Its core design features a modular battery system, allowing users to customize their range up to 240 kilometers by using one, two, or three battery modules. This flexibility directly targets range anxiety, a significant barrier to electric vehicle adoption. The vehicle boasts rapid acceleration, capable of going from 0 to 45 km/h in 3.9 seconds, positioning it competitively against petrol-powered counterparts. A notable feature is the large 7-inch touchscreen display integrated into the cockpit, which runs on Android and offers app-based controls for navigation, music, and communication, centralizing functionality and enhancing the user experience.

Etergo's business model focused on direct-to-consumer sales and a high-quality manufacturing approach. The company secured significant funding through multiple crowdfunding campaigns, demonstrating strong early-stage consumer interest and validation. This strategy allowed them to build a community around the product before mass production. The journey, however, faced financial hurdles, leading to a pivotal moment in 2020. Indian ride-hailing giant Ola acquired Etergo for an undisclosed amount, rebranding the Dutch company as Ola Electric. This acquisition provided the necessary capital to bring the AppScooter, subsequently developed into the Ola S1, to a global market, leveraging Ola's extensive manufacturing and distribution capabilities.
