Esure Group
One of UK's leading providers of insurance products
About Esure Group
Esure Group is a UK-based personal lines insurer founded in 2000 by Sir Peter Wood, a serial entrepreneur who previously established Direct Line, the UK's first telephone-only insurance company. Wood identified the potential of the internet to streamline the insurance process, aiming to pass savings onto careful and responsible customers. The company operates primarily as a direct-to-consumer insurer through its online and telephone channels, with a significant portion of its business originating from price comparison websites.
Esure's business model focuses on providing motor, home, and travel insurance to individuals in the UK market. The company generates revenue through the underwriting of insurance policies and the collection of premiums. Its brand portfolio includes the flagship esure brand, the female-focused Sheilas' Wheels (which now offers policies to everyone), and First Alternative, which caters to a broader risk appetite. The company’s strategy involves targeting lower-risk customers to offer more competitive premiums.
The company's history is marked by significant ownership changes and strategic shifts. Initially backed by Halifax bank, Wood led a management buyout in 2010 after Lloyds Banking Group sold its 70% stake. Esure Group went public with an IPO on the London Stock Exchange in March 2013, valuing the company at £1.2 billion. In December 2018, the firm was taken private after being acquired by the global private equity firm Bain Capital for £1.2 billion. More recently, in April 2025, Bain Capital agreed to sell Esure to the Belgian insurer Ageas for approximately €1.5 billion.
Under the leadership of CEO David McMillan, who joined in 2019, Esure has embarked on a major digital transformation strategy called the "Game Changer". This initiative involves a significant investment in a new cloud-native technology platform, data science, and artificial intelligence to enhance customer experience, improve pricing precision, and increase operational efficiency. By mid-2024, the company had successfully migrated all its customers to this new digital platform, decommissioning its legacy systems and positioning itself as a digital-first insurer. This transformation has enabled a significant portion of customer interactions to be handled online, supporting the company's ambition to become a leading digital insurer in the UK.
