Founded by Jean Lacroix, the company dedicated itself to cybersecurity, specifically for mobile communications and data. It built a reputation for providing military-grade security solutions for smartphones and tablets, attracting government and corporate clients who couldn't afford a breach. ERCOM developed a suite of products, including CryptoSmart, a solution for securing mobile devices, and other tools for encrypted file sharing and messaging. This focus on a high-stakes niche allowed the company to grow steadily, often working with government clients and major corporations. While the founder, Jean Lacroix, sold his stake in 2007, the company continued on its path, becoming a key player in France's sovereign security technology landscape. The pivotal moment in ERCOM's journey came in January 2019, when the French defense and technology giant Thales announced its acquisition of the company. The deal, valued at around €110 million, marked a significant consolidation in the French cybersecurity sector. By acquiring ERCOM, Thales substantially bolstered its own secure communications and information systems division, integrating ERCOM's specialized engineering talent and technology to enhance its offerings for both domestic and international markets.
