Equinor
An international energy company developing oil, gas, wind and solar energy
About Equinor
In 1972, the Norwegian parliament made a unanimous decision to create a state-owned oil company, Den Norske Stats Oljeselskap A/S, quickly shortened to Statoil. The objective was clear: to build national expertise and ensure the country participated directly in the burgeoning oil and gas industry on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. This wasn't just about revenue; it was a strategic move to build a domestic industrial powerhouse. A pivotal moment came in 2001 when Statoil underwent a partial privatization, listing on both the Oslo and New York stock exchanges to adapt to increasing international competition. While this introduced market discipline, the Norwegian state maintained its majority ownership. Then, in 2007, Statoil executed a major strategic play by merging with the oil and gas division of Norsk Hydro, another key Norwegian industrial player. This merger created the world's largest offshore operator, a true national energy champion. By 2018, the company recognized the global energy landscape was shifting. To reflect its transition from a focused oil and gas producer to a broad energy company with significant investments in renewables, Statoil rebranded as Equinor. The new name, combining 'equi' for equality and equilibrium with 'nor' for its Norwegian roots, signaled a new strategic direction focused on a lower-carbon future.
