Epinions

Energy · Brisbane, United States · Founded 1999

Consumer reviews platform offering consumer insights, unbiased advice, product evaluations, and personalized recommendations MoreLess

Epinions.com emerged in 1999, during the apex of the dot-com bubble, as a general consumer review website. It was established by a team of founders with pedigrees from prominent tech firms of the era: Nirav Tolia from Yahoo, Naval Ravikant from @Home, Ramanathan Guha from Netscape, Mike Speiser from McKinsey, and Dion Lim from Morgan Stanley. Their collective experience spanned engineering, business development, and finance, providing a multi-faceted foundation for the venture. The company secured an initial $8 million in seed funding from venture capitalists Benchmark Capital and August Capital.

The business operated on a user-generated content model, conceptualized as a blend of Amazon's customer reviews and eBay's community feel. Epinions incentivized content creation by offering to pay authors for their product reviews, with compensation tied to the perceived usefulness of their contributions by other users. Initially, revenue was dependent on advertising. Following the dot-com crash, the company pivoted its business model to survive. In 2001, it introduced a price comparison feature, which allowed it to generate revenue through referral fees and sales commissions from online retailers when shoppers were directed to their sites. This strategic shift enabled the company to reach profitability by 2002.

In 2003, Epinions was acquired by DealTime, a shopping search engine, for an undisclosed amount in stock. Nirav Tolia, the sole remaining founder at the time, became the COO of the newly merged entity, which was subsequently rebranded as Shopping.com. Shopping.com went public with an IPO on October 30, 2004, and was later acquired by eBay in 2005 for approximately $634 million. The journey was not without internal conflict; a lawsuit was filed in 2005 by several co-founders and early employee-stockholders against Tolia and the venture capital firms, alleging that crucial financial information was withheld during the DealTime merger, rendering their shares worthless. The case was settled under undisclosed terms. Over time, Epinions faced mounting competition from sites with free, crowdsourced reviews, leading to a decline. Community features were disabled in March 2014, and the site was fully shut down in May 2018, with its domain redirecting to Shopping.com.
