About Envision Pharmaceutical

Envision Pharmaceutical, which operated as EnvisionRxOptions, was a significant player in the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) sector. The company's trajectory is marked by a series of strategic acquisitions and rebranding efforts, culminating in its present form. A major milestone occurred in February 2015 when Rite Aid Corporation acquired EnvisionRx for approximately $2 billion. This acquisition was a strategic move by Rite Aid to expand its health and wellness offerings, enter the PBM market, and create a comprehensive pharmacy service across retail, specialty, and mail-order channels. EnvisionRx continued to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, led by its existing management team at the time.

The business functions as a full-service PBM, serving employers, health plans, and individuals by managing prescription drug benefits. Its revenue model is centered on providing administration of prescription savings plans, mail-order and specialty pharmacy services, and claims processing. This model aims to reduce healthcare costs and waste for its clients. Through its history, the company has incorporated various services, including MedTrakRx for PBM options, EnvisionPharmacies for mail and specialty services, and the Laker Software for its claims adjudication platform. It also provided a Medicare prescription drug plan.

In March 2020, EnvisionRxOptions announced a significant rebranding, consolidating its various entities under the new name, Elixir. This integration aimed to streamline its diverse pharmacy benefits, services, and technology companies into a single, cohesive brand. The integrated organization, Elixir, continued to be a wholly owned subsidiary of Rite Aid. The final chapter of this entity's independent evolution came to a close following Rite Aid's bankruptcy. In January 2024, MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc. acquired Elixir Solutions for $575 million. The integration of Elixir into MedImpact was completed in July 2024, a move intended to safeguard jobs and ensure service continuity for millions of members. Today, the former EnvisionRx operates as part of MedImpact, which remains an independent PBM.
