About Enel

In 1962, the Italian government initiated the creation of Enel, or the Ente Nazionale per l'energia Elettrica. This wasn't a startup born in a garage, but a state-owned entity founded through the unification of nearly 1,300 separate electric companies. The mission was to create a unified power system to support Italy's post-war economic boom and bring electricity to all corners of the country, bridging the gap between urban and rural areas. By the early 1970s, this goal was largely achieved, with 99% of Italy having access to electricity. The 1990s brought a wave of liberalization across Europe's energy markets. In 1992, Enel was transformed from a public body into a joint-stock company. The pivotal moment came in 1999 when, following the deregulation of Italy's electricity market, Enel was privatized and listed on the stock exchange in what was, at the time, the largest IPO in the nation's history. This event marked a fundamental shift from a state monopoly to a competitive market player. Following privatization, Enel embarked on a path of international expansion and a strategic focus on new technologies. A major move was the acquisition of Spanish utility Endesa in 2007, establishing a significant presence in Spain and Latin America. In 2008, the company launched Enel Green Power, a subsidiary that would become a global leader in renewable energy. This was followed by the IPO of Enel Green Power in 2010. Today, Enel operates in dozens of countries as a major global player in electricity and gas, with a strong focus on decarbonization and electrification.
