EmpowerTel Networks, founded in 1997, operated from its headquarters in Milpitas, California, as a provider of VoIP switching systems. The company was established to address the evolving needs of telecommunications service providers navigating the transition from traditional circuit-switched networks to packet-based infrastructures.

The firm was led by CEO Ajit Medhekar and was promoted by Lara Technology. EmpowerTel Networks secured significant financial backing to fuel its growth and product development. In a notable Series B funding round on February 2, 2000, the company raised $54 million from a consortium of institutional investors, including TeleSoft Partners, Goldman Sachs, CCMP Capital, and Morgan Stanley. Other reports from the period indicated a total of $75 million raised from a wider group of venture capitalists.

EmpowerTel's core offering was the Unified Services Exchange (USX) switch. This product was designed to bridge the gap between legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technology and emerging IP and ATM networks. The USX switch integrated call control, a media gateway, and an application service platform into a single piece of hardware. This allowed service providers to migrate their voice traffic to modern IP infrastructure without abandoning their existing network investments. The target market comprised both established service providers looking to modernize and new entrants building out their networks. The company had an international presence with offices in the United States, Canada, and India. EmpowerTel Networks was eventually acquired.
