About Emergent Game Technologies

Emergent Game Technologies operated as a key provider of middleware for the video game industry, founded in 2000 and initially known as Butterfly.net Inc. until May 2005. The company's core business involved licensing its proprietary game development software to studios, enabling them to reduce production risks and shorten development cycles for games across various platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC. Its revenue model was based on licensing fees for its software suites. The company's history is marked by a significant merger in August 2005 with Numerical Design Limited (NDL), the original creators of the NetImmerse engine which dated back to 1997. This acquisition brought the acclaimed engine, subsequently rebranded and heavily developed as Gamebryo, into Emergent's portfolio.

The company's main product line consisted of the Gamebryo engine and its more advanced successor, Gamebryo LightSpeed. Gamebryo was a versatile C++ based 3D graphics engine used in the creation of nearly 300 titles, famously including award-winning games like *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion*, *Fallout 3*, and *Civilization Revolution*. It provided developers with a flexible and modular set of tools for building 3D experiences. Gamebryo LightSpeed was introduced as a more comprehensive solution, designed to accelerate development by facilitating rapid prototyping and real-time updates. Despite its technological contributions and raising significant venture capital, including a $12.5 million round in 2009, Emergent faced financial difficulties. In November 2010, the company's assets were put up for sale, culminating in an acquisition by its long-time South Korean strategic partner, Gamebase Co., Ltd., in December 2010.
