Brazilian online handmade products marketplace MoreLess

Elo7 operates as an online marketplace based in Brazil, providing a platform for artisans and small entrepreneurs to sell their creative and handmade products directly to consumers. The company was founded in 2008 by the couple Juliano and Mônica Ipolito in Campinas, São Paulo, with the goal of creating a unified online channel for the country's artisans. This initiative addressed a market need for a centralized platform where craftspeople could gain visibility and scale their businesses, which were often marginalized by mass production.

The platform's business model is commission-based, charging sellers a percentage of each sale, which ranges from 12% to 18%. This structure allows sellers to set up their personalized digital storefronts and list products without incurring fixed costs or monthly fees. Elo7 provides a comprehensive solution that includes the creation of a customized store, product catalog management, and payment processing for credit cards and bank slips. The marketplace features a diverse array of products across more than 40 retail categories, including clothing, accessories, home decor, jewelry, and party supplies. A significant portion of its sales, over 50%, comes from items related to special events and life moments like weddings and baby showers.

The company experienced significant growth through word-of-mouth marketing in its early years. This organic growth attracted international investors, leading to its first major funding round in 2011 from Monashees Capital and Accel Partners. Following the investment, Carlos Curioni, former director of operations at Mercado Libre, was appointed CEO to professionalize and scale the business. Under his leadership, Elo7 expanded significantly. In July 2021, Etsy, Inc. acquired Elo7 for $217 million, aiming to establish a foothold in the Latin American e-commerce market. Elo7 was to operate as a standalone marketplace, retaining its existing leadership team and headquarters in São Paulo. However, in July 2023, Etsy sold Elo7 to the Brazilian firm Enjoei for an undisclosed amount, citing that the performance had not met expectations partly due to the macroeconomic environment.
