Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford
Global research institute founded by Larry Ellison advancing technology to address humanity’s greatest challenges
About Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford
The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) is a research and development institute founded by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, established in 2023 with an initial Los Angeles campus and expanding significantly with a major campus in Oxford. The institute's mission is to solve complex global problems by breaking down silos between science, engineering, policy, and entrepreneurship.
EIT focuses on four primary "Humane Endeavours": Health, Medical Science & Generative Biology; Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture; Clean Energy Generation & Storage; and Artificial Intelligence & Robotics. Its approach is to translate scientific discovery directly into commercial products and sustainable companies, reinvesting profits to fund further research and ensure self-sufficiency. A key project is the Global Pathogen Analysis Service (GPAS), a bioinformatics platform for rapid pathogen analysis to prevent future pandemics.
Financed by Ellison with commitments exceeding £1 billion for the Oxford site alone, the institute operates on patient capital to support high-risk, high-reward science. EIT has established a deep, long-term strategic alliance with the University of Oxford, involving over £130 million in joint research programs and the creation of a Centre for Doctoral Training in AI. This partnership includes an "alliance faculty model" where university researchers can work at EIT and institute scientists can hold academic appointments. EIT also funds the Ellison Scholars program for undergraduate and postgraduate students at Oxford.
The Oxford campus, designed by Foster + Partners and set for completion by 2027, will feature over 2 million square feet of advanced laboratories, an oncology clinic, and collaborative workspaces at The Oxford Science Park. The institute is led by a global team, including EIT Global President Santa Ono, formerly president of the University of Michigan and a distinguished biomedical researcher.
