About Elemental Technologies

Founded in 2006, Elemental Technologies carved a niche in the video processing sector by pioneering the use of graphics processing units (GPUs) to power adaptive video streaming over IP networks. The company was established in Portland, Oregon, by Sam Blackman, Jesse Rosenzweig, and Brian Lewis, three engineers who formerly worked at semiconductor company Pixelworks.

Elemental's core business revolves around providing software-defined video solutions that enable media and entertainment companies to process and deliver video content to a wide array of devices. The company's software allows clients to take live and on-demand video from traditional distribution networks—like cable and satellite—and reformat it for delivery to PCs, smartphones, tablets, and TVs. Its client roster included major media franchises such as the BBC, HBO, ESPN, and Comcast. Revenue was generated through the sale of its software and hardware-accelerated video processing systems.

The product suite included several key offerings. Elemental Server focused on file-based video processing (transcoding), while Elemental Live handled real-time video and audio encoding for live streaming. The company also offered Elemental Delta for video delivery optimization and Elemental Conductor for managing multiple video processing units. These products were available as on-premises solutions, in the cloud, and in hybrid models.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in September 2015 for approximately $296 million. This move was designed to integrate Elemental's video solutions with the AWS cloud platform, offering customers a more robust infrastructure for scaling video services. Following the acquisition, the company was rebranded as AWS Elemental in April 2017. The integration led to the creation of AWS Media Services, a suite of cloud-based tools for video processing and delivery, including services like AWS Elemental MediaConvert and AWS Elemental MediaLive.
