About Electrawinds
Electrawinds, established in 1998 in Ostend, Belgium, operates as a developer and producer in the renewable energy sector. The company was founded by brothers Luc and Paul Desender, alongside Paul Vandekerckhove. Luc Desender, an entrepreneur who previously ran a VW-Audi concession, transitioned into the energy sector by developing Belgium's first private wind farm. This initial project set the stage for the company's expansion.
The firm's business model is centered on the design, development, construction, and operation of renewable energy projects. Electrawinds is vertically integrated, managing its projects from conception to energy production. Its portfolio includes a diverse range of energy sources such as onshore and offshore wind farms, biomass plants, and solar installations. The company generates revenue through the production and sale of green energy. Over the years, Electrawinds expanded its operations internationally, with projects in numerous countries including France, Italy, Romania, Ireland, Bulgaria, and South Africa.
The company experienced a period of rapid growth, culminating in a merger with European CleanTech I in 2012 to become Electrawinds SE. However, this expansion led to financial difficulties, and in late 2013, the company sought protection from creditors. A rescue plan was approved in April 2014, resulting in a significant restructuring. The Belgian and French wind energy activities were acquired by the Walloon intercommunal Tecteo (now Nethys) for a symbolic one euro, along with most of the associated debt, and rebranded as Elicio. A smaller version of Electrawinds continued to exist, managing the remaining biomass and certain wind assets not included in the deal. Founder Luc Desender has since moved on to launch other circular economy ventures, including Renasci and End2Waste.
