Eka Systems, founded in 2000, established itself as a specialized provider of secure and adaptive RF wireless networking technologies tailored for smart grid communication applications. The company's core focus was on the utility sector, offering products and services to electric, gas, and water utilities aiming to modernize their infrastructure.

The firm's flagship offering was the EkaNet™ Smart Network, an open-standards-based wireless Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution. This platform provided utilities with a range of capabilities, including automated meter reading, near real-time tracking of usage data, power outage detection, and enhanced billing options. The product suite was comprehensive, encompassing radios, wireless repeaters, meter nodes, gateways, and data collection tools. To serve a global market, the technology operated on the 900MHz frequency for domestic U.S. markets and the 2.4GHz frequency, an accepted standard for international markets.

Eka Systems operated on a business-to-business (B2B) model, working directly with utility companies and also partnering with meter manufacturers like Landis+Gyr and Elster Electricity to embed its technology into their hardware. This strategy allowed for wider adoption of its AMI solutions. For instance, the company developed the EKA-1600, a small circuit board embedded in water meters to collect and transmit consumption data wirelessly, helping utilities detect leaks and manage resources more efficiently. A significant milestone for the company was its acquisition by Cooper Industries on April 13, 2010. The acquisition was a strategic move by Cooper Industries to integrate Eka's RF wireless networking capabilities into its Cooper Power Systems division, complementing its existing portfolio of utility automation solutions.
