Edison Pharmaceuticals develops medicines for the treatments of children and adults diagnosed with rare and neglected diseases
About Edison Pharmaceuticals
Founded in 2005 by Dr. Guy Miller, Edison Pharmaceuticals, Inc. established itself as a specialty biopharmaceutical company with a strategic focus on developing treatments for orphan mitochondrial diseases. The company's core operational strategy revolved around its proprietary redox biochemistry platform, which was designed to discover and validate drugs targeting cellular energy metabolism. This platform aimed to bridge learnings from rare pediatric mitochondrial diseases to more common adult central nervous system disorders where mitochondrial dysfunction is also believed to play a role.
Edison's business model was centered on the research and development of novel therapeutics, with a revenue strategy based on strategic partnerships, licensing agreements, and milestone payments. A pivotal moment in the company's history was the strategic alliance formed with Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (DSP) in 2014, valued at up to $4.295 billion. This agreement provided Edison with significant non-dilutive capital, including a $10M upfront payment and $40M in R&D support, in exchange for development and commercialization rights to jointly discovered drugs in Japan and North America. The company also secured substantial venture funding, including a $20M Series F round in 2012 and a $50M venture round in 2014, to advance its clinical programs.
The company's lead drug candidate was EPI-743, later known as Vatiquinone. This orally bioavailable small molecule, a para-benzoquinone, was developed to treat inherited mitochondrial diseases by augmenting glutathione synthesis and optimizing metabolic control. EPI-743 received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA for several conditions, including Friedreich's ataxia and Leigh syndrome, and progressed to Phase 2B/3 clinical trials. Another key asset was EPI-589, a next-generation compound targeting adult CNS diseases, which advanced to Phase 1B trials. The company, which was later known as BioElectron Technology, was eventually acquired by PTC Therapeutics.
