Edimer Pharmaceuticals | Bringing Hope to XLHED
About Edimer Pharmaceuticals
Edimer Pharmaceuticals was a biotechnology company established in 2009 with a focus on developing treatments for rare genetic diseases. The firm was headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and operated as a privately held, venture capital-backed entity. Edimer's primary business was the research and development of a therapy for X-linked Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (XLHED), an orphan disease characterized by symptoms such as the absence of sweat glands, respiratory issues, and dental and hair malformations. The company's business model centered on advancing its lead drug candidate through clinical trials to gain regulatory approval and subsequently commercialize it for patients affected by XLHED.
The company's flagship product was EDI200, a recombinant protein designed to replace the ectodysplasin-A1 (EDA-A1) protein that is deficient in individuals with XLHED. This protein replacement therapy aimed to correct the developmental disorder by activating the signaling pathways necessary for the normal development of skin, teeth, and other ectodermal structures. In animal models, EDI200 demonstrated the ability to reduce mortality and morbidity. Edimer advanced EDI200 into Phase 2 clinical trials, with the first newborn patient dosed in October 2013. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had granted EDI200 both Orphan Drug designation and Fast Track status, and it also held Orphan Drug designation in Europe.
Financially, Edimer Pharmaceuticals secured significant funding to support its research and development efforts. In June 2009, it raised $22 million in a Series A funding round. This was followed by an $18 million Series B financing in July 2013, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA) with participation from Sanofi-Genzyme BioVentures, Third Rock Ventures, and VI Partners. The company's operations ceased around January 2017. Following Edimer's closure, the rights to its therapeutic program were transferred to the EspeRare Foundation, which planned to relaunch a clinical trial for the treatment, then named ER-004. The research Edimer initiated continued under other organizations, highlighting the initial program's importance in the field.
