The company was founded in October 2018 by CEO Cameron Weeks and CTO Bracken Fields, who possess a long-standing entrepreneurial partnership in the communication technology sector. Their journey began in 2006 while attending Purdue University, where they launched their first venture designing a custom PBX system. This early project evolved through several iterations, including Fathom Voice and Sharpen Technologies, a cloud-based contact center solutions provider. This deep experience in the contact center industry informed their decision to launch Edify, aiming to address the fragmentation and outdated technology they observed in the market.

Edify's business model is centered on a subscription-based service for its cloud-native platform, which integrates Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS), Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), and API functionalities (CPaaS) into a single, no-code environment. This unified approach, termed Business Communications as a Service (BCaaS), allows clients to manage all internal and external communications through one interface, eliminating the need for separate, often costly and complex, legacy systems. The company generates revenue from tiered subscription plans aimed at organizations of various sizes and through usage-based pricing for its API and workflow automation tools.

The core product, initially launched as Edify Huddle in 2019 and now known as Edify CX, is a key differentiator. It allows users, such as contact center agents and internal subject matter experts, to transition seamlessly between communication channels like voice, video, chat, and social media within a single conversational window. The platform incorporates features like an AI engine for natural language understanding and intelligent routing, a drag-and-drop workflow builder, and real-time data streaming and analytics. A significant milestone was the acquisition by Avaya in May 2024, integrating Edify's platform into Avaya's broader customer experience portfolio. Before the acquisition, Edify had secured a total of $26.9 million in funding over two rounds, including a notable $10 million seed round in 2019 led by First Round Capital.
