EDF is a French state-owned multinational electric utility company, headquartered in Paris, specializing in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, with operations worldwide
About EDF
In the aftermath of World War II, France embarked on a mission to rebuild and modernize. A central piece of this strategy was controlling the nation's energy. On April 8, 1946, under the direction of Marcel Paul, the Minister of Industrial Production, the French government founded Électricité de France, or EDF. This move nationalized and merged approximately 1,700 smaller energy companies into a single, state-owned entity. The goal was clear: to ensure stable and affordable electricity to power the country's reconstruction and future growth. For decades, EDF operated as a monopoly, becoming a global leader in electricity generation, largely by making a significant bet on nuclear power. This strategy was famously articulated by the phrase, "We do not have oil, but we have ideas." However, at the turn of the century, the landscape shifted. European directives aimed at opening energy markets to competition ended EDF's monopoly in 1999. This led to a landmark event: in November 2005, EDF went public in a partial privatization, listing on the Euronext Paris stock exchange, though the French state retained a majority stake of over 84%. The company's journey as a publicly traded entity proved challenging, marked by financial pressures and issues with its aging nuclear reactors. Facing a global energy crisis and the need for massive investment in its nuclear fleet, the French government decided to reverse course. In June 2023, the state completed a full re-nationalization of EDF, spending approximately €9.7 billion to acquire all remaining shares and delist the company. This brought EDF full circle, returning it to complete state control to steer France's energy future.
