About Edbro
In the early 20th century, a company known as Edward Brothers was founded in Bolton, UK, focusing on general engineering. However, it was a pivotal innovation by Maurice Edwards in 1916 that set the company on a new trajectory; he developed the first-ever truck-engine-powered hydraulic hoist. This invention established the company as a pioneer in the tipping gear market. Following a merger with the Bromilow family in 1919, the company became Bromilow & Edwards. Over time, it became popularly known by the portmanteau 'Edbro', a name that was formally adopted as it expanded globally. For decades, Edbro built a reputation for durable and well-engineered hydraulic tipping systems. The company's journey involved several ownership changes. In 2012, the German truck components manufacturer JOST Group acquired Edbro from Caravelle, aiming to integrate Edbro's hydraulic systems into its global product portfolio. This move was intended to help Edbro access new markets through JOST's extensive sales and distribution network. A decade later, another significant event occurred. In May 2021, Enact, a private equity fund, acquired Edbro from JOST, which had decided the hydraulics subsidiary was a non-core asset. Most recently, in March 2025, Edbro was acquired by Orsan Industries, a Turkish-headquartered group manufacturing parts for the heavy-duty vehicle sector. This latest acquisition aims to position Orsan as a global player and create synergies between the two companies' product offerings.
