In 1996, the concept of a mobile workforce was just beginning to take shape, and with it came a critical new challenge: security. This was the playbook for Ecutel Systems, a company founded to tackle the emerging world of enterprise mobility. Ecutel focused on providing secure networking and mobile access solutions, developing software that allowed government, public safety, and enterprise customers to connect remotely without compromising sensitive data. The company showed early promise, securing a $6.4 million Series A funding round in September 2000, followed by a Series B in 2002. With backing from investors like Intel Capital and Core Capital Partners, Ecutel was positioned to build out its product suite, which included its Viatores mobile VPN. The business was about enabling connectivity and command and control for a workforce that was no longer tethered to a desk. The pivotal chapter in the Ecutel story arrived on February 9, 2007. The company was acquired by Smith Micro Software, a publicly traded company specializing in wireless and mobility solutions, for approximately $8 million. The acquisition marked a successful exit for the venture-backed company, integrating its secure access technology into a larger portfolio and validating its early vision of a secure, mobile-first enterprise landscape.
