About ecop Technologies

ecop Technologies GmbH is an Austrian clean-tech company that develops, manufactures, and markets high-temperature industrial heat pumps. The firm was founded in 2011 by Bernhard Adler, who serves as CTO and is the inventor of the company's core technology. He is joined by CEO Fabian Sacharowitz, who previously led the DACH team at InnoEnergy and worked at KPMG and the World Economic Forum. Adler's background is in mechanical engineering and mechatronics, and he began developing the company even before graduating.

The company's key product is the Rotation Heat Pump, designed to help industrial companies and heat manufacturers decarbonize their processes. Unlike conventional heat pumps that are often limited to output temperatures of around 80-90°C, ecop's technology can reach up to 200°C. This is achieved through a unique process based on a left-hand Joule process, where a climate-friendly, non-flammable noble gas mixture is compressed via centrifugal force at speeds up to 1,800 rpm. This method avoids the phase transitions and environmentally harmful refrigerants common in traditional systems. The technology is protected by 68 patents. The modular design of the rotor allows for performance scaling, with individual 700 kW cores that can be combined to reach up to 10 MW.

ecop's business model centers on selling these heat pump systems to industrial producers and municipalities, enabling them to recover and reuse waste heat, thereby reducing reliance on natural gas and other fossil fuels. The technology is applicable in various sectors, including district heating, steam production, industrial drying, and cooling processes for data centers. Each unit can save up to 2,500 tons of CO2 annually. The company's initial commercial focus is on the European market, with plans to expand globally starting in 2029.

The company has secured significant funding to support its growth. In July 2024, it was awarded €8.5 million from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, consisting of a €2.5 million grant and €6 million in equity. This was followed by a €10.5 million financing round in May 2025, led by global pump and valve manufacturer KSB, with co-investment from the EIC Fund and others like InnoEnergy. This capital is being used to expand production at its facility in Wiener Neudorf, Austria, and to finalize a redesigned rotor for series production, which is scheduled to begin in 2026.
