Platform that gives users cryptocurrencies for doing tasks such as replying to emails MoreLess
Earn.com began its journey in 2013 as 21 Inc., a company that initially focused on Bitcoin mining hardware and operations before pivoting its strategy. Founded by Balaji S. Srinivasan, among others, the venture evolved to address a different niche within the cryptocurrency landscape. Srinivasan, an entrepreneur and investor with a deep technical background including multiple degrees from Stanford University and a past role as a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, guided the company through its transformation.
In 2017, the company rebranded from 21.co to Earn.com, shifting its core business to a blockchain-based paid messaging platform. The service created a marketplace where users could earn cryptocurrency, initially Bitcoin, by replying to emails and completing micro-tasks. This model was designed to solve the issue of email overload and spam by allowing senders to pay recipients for their attention, ensuring higher response rates for legitimate outreach like recruiting, marketing, and surveys. For users, it provided a way to monetize their time and expertise, earning digital currency without needing a traditional bank account, accessible from any phone.
The business model catered to two distinct client types. On one side, individuals could create a public profile, join interest-based lists, and get paid for completing tasks. On the other, businesses and researchers could send mass messages and surveys with a financial incentive, achieving response rates reportedly between 30-70%, a significant improvement over typical cold emails. Revenue was generated from these senders who paid to access the network of users. The platform was considered one of the earlier practical applications of blockchain technology to gain significant user traction.
In April 2018, the company reached a major milestone when it was acquired by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase for an amount reported to be over $100 million. The acquisition was also a strategic talent acquisition, as Balaji Srinivasan became Coinbase's first Chief Technology Officer. Following the acquisition, Earn.com was set to continue as a standalone business, with plans to integrate and scale its services across Coinbase's large user base. However, about a year later, Coinbase decided to sunset the Earn.com service to concentrate its efforts on Coinbase Earn, a separate initiative focused on educating users about different cryptocurrencies.
