The story of Duroflex begins in 1963 in Kerala, founded by P.C. Mathew. An engineer, Mathew was inspired during a trip to Germany where he saw the use of rubberized coir in car seats for its durability. He decided to apply this technology to mattresses in India, starting his business with a modest initial investment. Facing challenges with importing machinery, Mathew reverse-engineered the process to establish his factory. Early on, the company secured significant orders from Indian Railways and for hospital beds, which helped establish the brand's credibility. For decades, Duroflex operated as a family business. The second generation, including Mathew Chandy, took the helm and professionalized the company's operations. A pivotal moment came in 2018 when Duroflex raised $22 million in its first significant funding round from Lighthouse Funds, enabling a major push for national expansion. This was followed by a larger $60 million funding round in 2021 led by Norwest Venture Partners. This capital infusion was earmarked for expanding its manufacturing capabilities, enhancing technology, and growing its direct-to-consumer presence. Today, Duroflex has a multi-brand strategy, including the online-focused Sleepyhead brand, which targets millennial consumers. The company has successfully transitioned to an omnichannel model, with a substantial portion of its revenue coming from online sales. With strong private equity backing, Duroflex is scaling its operations with an eye toward a potential future IPO.
