Freevolt Technologies
Batteryless biometric smart cards powered by patented RF energy harvesting
About Freevolt Technologies
Freevolt Technologies, formerly Drayson Technologies, is a London-based technology company founded in 2013 by Lord (Paul) Drayson and Lady (Elspeth) Drayson. It develops proprietary, patented technology that harvests ambient radio frequency (RF) energy from NFC, cellular and Wi-Fi networks to power low-energy electronics without batteries, and owns more than 20 granted patents.
Its lead product is S-Key, a batteryless biometric smart card launched in 2022 for access control. The card stores the user's fingerprint on the card itself and is powered by the radio waves already emitted by existing card readers, so it adds two-factor biometric security without changes to reader infrastructure, central databases or extra software. Freevolt sells S-Key through resellers in the UK and abroad, is seeking licensees for its patent portfolio, and also carries out engineering consultancy projects for client companies. Other target uses for the technology include payments, cryptocurrency wallets and healthcare cards.
In 2014 the company acquired intellectual property from Imperial College London. It was previously known as Drayson Wireless and Drayson Technologies (Europe), developed the CleanSpace air-quality monitoring network, and spun off its clinical AI business as Sensyne Health in 2018. It has raised venture funding from investors including Capital Invent, Lansdowne Partners and Woodford Investment Management.
