About DolphinSearch
DolphinSearch, Inc. operated as a specialized provider of electronic document discovery solutions, primarily serving the legal and audit professions, as well as large enterprises. The company was founded in 1999, with Herb Roitblat being the original creator of its core technology. Dan Ferranti later served as the company's CEO and President.
The firm's proprietary search technology was uniquely inspired by fifteen years of advanced research into the precision with which dolphins locate and recognize objects. This foundational technology was developed into a system through a collaborative effort between legal, audit, compliance professionals, and technical experts. DolphinSearch provided a suite of tools designed to capture, store, and retrieve electronic documents, including emails. Its patented concept-learning neural network technology enabled the identification, analysis, categorization, and preservation of electronic documents with high accuracy. The business model involved providing products and services for eDiscovery for litigation, due-diligence investigations, and compliance, as well as licensing its patented technology to other companies.
A key offering was the DolphinSearch Intelligent Archive Director, which classified documents based on retention rules and allowed for detailed investigations. In 2006, the company released the DolphinSearch Online eDiscovery Review Console, a dashboard providing workflow management, estimation tools, and tracking for complex eDiscovery projects, aimed at large corporations, government agencies, and law firms. Over its history, the company was venture-backed, raising $14M from investors like California Technology Ventures and Insight Partners. After a period where its technology was part of LexisNexis's Applied Discovery unit, it was re-acquired by Roitblat's team. The company was ultimately acquired by Daticon, LLC, a Xiotech Company, on June 26, 2007.
