DNA
Telecommunications company that provides voice, data, and cable TV services to private customers and corporations
About DNA
The story of DNA begins not with a single founder, but with a collective of about 40 Finnish telephone companies. In 1999, these companies established a group to expand their mobile operations, which officially became DNA in 2001. This wasn't a startup in a garage; it was a strategic move by established regional players to create a national challenger in Finland's telecommunications market. The new entity was designed to compete by providing mobile, data, and TV services across the country. The company's structure was complex, born from the Finnet group of telephone cooperatives. A key turning point came in 2007 when the largest members merged their businesses directly with DNA, consolidating operations and forming the modern DNA Group. This move streamlined the company, allowing it to focus on building out its network and services. Over the next several years, DNA invested heavily in technology, launching its 4G network in 2011 and later co-founding Finnish Shared Network Ltd to improve coverage in more remote parts of Finland. A significant financial milestone was reached in late 2016 when DNA launched its Initial Public Offering on the Nasdaq Helsinki, the largest IPO in Finland for a decade. This gave the company greater access to capital and increased its public profile. The final chapter, for now, was written in 2019 when the Norwegian telecommunications giant Telenor acquired a majority stake for approximately $1.7 billion, eventually taking full ownership. DNA was delisted from the stock exchange in early 2020 but continues to operate under its own strong brand within the Telenor family.
