DIGITAL GRID
Peer-to-peer renewable energy trading for corporate decarbonization.
About DIGITAL GRID
DIGITAL GRID Corporation operates at the intersection of energy and technology, facilitating corporate decarbonization through a suite of specialized services. The company's origins trace back to the "Digital Grid" concept developed in 2008 in Professor Rikiya Abe's laboratory at the University of Tokyo. This concept envisioned a system where electricity could be digitally identified and traded freely, a departure from the traditional one-way flow of power.
The company was officially founded as Digital Grid Platform Corporation in October 2017, later changing its name to DIGITAL GRID Corporation in December 2017. Its establishment was the culmination of years of research and development that began with a University of Tokyo endowed course in 2011 and the formation of a consortium to develop a 'digital grid router'. Yusuke Toyoda, who joined the founding efforts in February 2018 and became President and CEO in July 2019, brought experience from Goldman Sachs in financial products and utility-scale solar investments.
The firm's core offering is the Digital Grid Platform (DGP), Japan's first privately-operated power trading marketplace, which launched commercially in February 2020. This platform enables direct, peer-to-peer transactions between electricity generators and corporate consumers, bypassing traditional utility pricing structures. It uses AI for high-precision supply and demand forecasting to optimize operations and allows clients to customize their energy procurement by choosing specific power sources, including renewables. The business model centers on a system usage fee, passing electricity costs directly to the customer, which provides transparency and cost reduction opportunities.
To further support corporate green transformation (GX), DIGITAL GRID offers several other services. RE BRIDGE is a matching platform for corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), launched in July 2023. Econohashi is a proxy procurement service for non-fossil fuel certificates, simplifying the transition to renewable energy for businesses. The company also engages in the power balancing business through its subsidiary, DIGITAL GRID ASSET MANAGEMENT Corporation, which develops and operates battery storage to stabilize the grid and maximize renewable energy use.
Clients range from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, and real estate, with notable users like Hitachi and Tokyu Land Corporation. The company has achieved significant milestones, including listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market in April 2025 and surpassing 2,000 installation sites for its DGP by August 2023.
