About Destinator Technologies

Destinator Technologies Inc. was a developer of wireless software for GPS navigation, founded in 2003 by Ron Yekutiel. The company was headquartered in Richmond Hill, Canada, with additional operations in the US, Germany, China, and Israel. Destinator developed, marketed, and sold software that enabled GPS navigation functionality on a variety of mobile devices, including Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs), personal digital assistants (PDAs), and smartphones running Windows Mobile or Symbian.

The company's core business involved providing software development kits (SDKs) and licensing its navigation software to device makers and major clients, which included prominent names like Motorola and LG. This business-to-business model allowed hardware manufacturers to integrate turn-by-turn navigation into their products. Destinator's software was noted for features such as a customizable user interface with day/night modes, 2D and 3D map views, and a comprehensive point-of-interest (POI) search function. The software leveraged NavTech maps, which were also used by other navigation systems of the era. Later versions introduced advanced functionalities like a trip-planner for optimizing multi-stop routes and real-time traffic updates.

Throughout its operation, Destinator Technologies secured approximately $16.5 million in funding over several rounds from investors including AIG Investments, VentureLink Funds, Pac-Link Management, and Cytex Ventures. In July 2008, following a court-administered restructuring process, the assets of Destinator Technologies were acquired by Intrinsyc Software International Inc., a Vancouver-based wireless software solutions provider, for about $16 million in cash and shares. The acquisition included Destinator's software products, a portfolio of seventeen patents, and its development centers in China and Israel, expanding Intrinsyc's capabilities into the GPS market.
