Defense Mobile
A 4g mobile service for army veterans and their families
About Defense Mobile
Defense Mobile Corporation operated as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) founded in 2013 by Brendan Reilly and Phil Prouty. The company was headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, and established itself with a clear mission: to serve the U.S. military community. This target market included active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, a demographic of over 22 million people. Revenue was generated through the sale of no-contract mobile plans that included talk, text, and 4G LTE data, as well as through the sale of popular smartphones.
The company's strategic approach as an MVNO allowed it to offer nationwide coverage by partnering with major network operators such as AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. This multi-carrier access was a significant operational advantage, theoretically providing more consistent service coverage than single-network MVNOs. Defense Mobile structured its offerings with branch-specific brands like ARMYmobile, NAVYmobile, and AIRFORCEmobile, creating a tailored appeal for its customer base. In a move to broaden its reach, the company partnered with RadioShack in November 2014, making its services and phones available in over 2,500 retail locations.
Beyond standard cellular services, Defense Mobile aimed to deliver added value through a suite of free, military-focused mobile applications. A key offering was the miliSource app, designed to help veterans and their families identify and access federal, state, and local benefits they were entitled to. The company highlighted that many families were not taking full advantage of available benefits, and this app was positioned to close that gap. Other services included miliCash, a mobile wallet and prepaid card offering cashback rewards, and a branded email service with significant storage. The company secured $30 million in total funding over three rounds, including a major Series A round of $20 million in late 2014. Despite its targeted mission and product offerings, public records indicate the company filed for bankruptcy liquidation in June 2016.
