About DeepFlex

Established in 2004, DeepFlex was a Houston-based manufacturer that specialized in unbonded composite flexible pipes for the subsea oil and gas industry. The company's business model revolved around designing, manufacturing, and deploying these non-metallic pipes for challenging deepwater environments. Its product line included Flexible Fiber Reinforced Pipe (FFRP) and Flexible Hybrid Reinforced Pipe (FHRP), which were designed to be lighter and more resistant to corrosion compared to traditional steel pipes, potentially lowering installation costs.

DeepFlex targeted major offshore oil and gas producing regions, with a significant focus on the Brazilian market, which represented a large portion of the worldwide demand for unbonded flexible pipes. The company provided its products for a variety of subsea applications, including production, gas lift and injection, water injection, chemical lines, risers, and jumpers. Beyond the oil and gas sector, its solutions were also intended for subsea mining and light well intervention.

The company's journey was marked by several funding rounds to support its growth and expansion plans. It raised a Series C of $33 million in 2008, with investors including Nomura Private Equity, Altira Group, and the venture arm of Chevron. This was followed by a significant funding agreement and recapitalization in 2011, led by Brazilian private equity firm AEM Capital, to simplify its capital structure and facilitate expansion into Brazil. Another funding round in 2013 brought in more capital from Brazilian firms and existing investors to establish a manufacturing center in Brazil and expand its U.S. capabilities. Over its lifetime, DeepFlex raised a total of approximately $38 million to $53 million. Despite its efforts and patented technology, the company eventually became deadpooled and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
