Infrastructure operations and maintenance services
About DBi Services
In 1978, brothers Neal and Paul DeAngelo started a small maintenance company in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, focusing on local residential and commercial properties. This humble beginning laid the groundwork for what would become DBi Services, a major player in infrastructure operations and maintenance. The core of the business was providing essential services like roadway maintenance, vegetation management, and traffic sign upkeep to government agencies and private companies. The company grew steadily from a local business into a global network with operations across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. A pivotal moment in the company's journey occurred in 2016 when the DeAngelo family sold a majority stake to Sterling Partners, a private equity firm. This partnership was intended to fuel further growth and solidify DBi's market position, bringing in a new CEO to lead the expansion. Under new ownership, DBi pursued an aggressive growth strategy, making several acquisitions to expand its service offerings, including a move into intelligent transportation systems. However, the story took a sharp turn in October 2021, when DBi Services abruptly shut down, laying off approximately 2,000 employees across 45 states. In a surprising epilogue, the second generation of the DeAngelo family, through their new company DeAngelo Contracting Services, purchased the assets of the former family business, hiring back hundreds of former employees and aiming to rebuild on a more manageable scale.
