The power of true customer experience orchestration
About Darwin CX
Darwin CX provides a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform tailored for the subscription and membership economy. Founded in 2017 by Laas Turnbull and Michael Smith, the Toronto-based company was established to provide modern digital tools to consumer marketers in the publishing space, an industry they felt had seen little technological innovation for decades. The founders identified a need to replace archaic legacy systems with a customer-centric approach reliant on data-driven insights. Smith, the current CTO, brings a technical background in cloud-first application architecture and has previously founded and sold two startups. Turnbull, the initial CEO, had a background in media, holding senior roles at The Globe and Mail and ZoomerMedia before co-founding Darwin CX.
The company operates on a subscription business model, offering its platform to publishers, membership organizations, and media companies. This model provides clients with a predictable monthly fee instead of per-use charges, a departure from the industry norm. Darwin CX serves as a centralized platform for managing the entire subscription lifecycle, from customer acquisition and retention to fulfillment and financial reporting. It aims to help businesses transition from traditional print to digital-first models. The platform consolidates both online and offline subscriber data to create a unified customer view, enabling clients to launch omnichannel experiences. Key features include a Customer Data Platform (CDP) for data collection and identity resolution, campaign management, real-time analytics dashboards, paywall services, and tools for A/B testing and marketing automation. The company also offers end-to-end offline services, including magazine fulfillment and subscription box management.
Significant milestones include its formal launch as a SaaS platform in 2018. In August 2020, Studio Media Group acquired Darwin CX from ZoomerMedia. This was followed by substantial venture funding rounds, including $38.4 million in December 2022 and an additional $12 million in January 2025, to scale operations and enhance the platform. In June 2024, Darwin CX expanded into the European market by becoming a shareholder in dsb, a German provider of similar SaaS solutions. As of early 2024, the platform supported over 300 brands across North America, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.
