The story of Dalmia Cements begins in 1939, just as the world was on the brink of monumental change. In India, industrialist Jaidayal Dalmia founded the company, establishing its first cement plant in Tamil Nadu with a modest capacity of 250 tons per day. This venture was part of the larger Dalmia Group, a conglomerate co-founded with his brother, Ramkrishna Dalmia, which had interests in sugar, chemicals, and more. The early decades saw steady expansion, but a significant strategic shift occurred in 2010. The original company, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited, went through a demerger to separate its cement and sugar businesses. The cement operations were housed in a new entity, Dalmia Bharat Enterprises Ltd (now Dalmia Bharat Ltd), which listed on the stock exchange in early 2011. This move allowed each business to pursue its own growth trajectory, with the cement arm attracting a major investment from KKR, a notable event in India's cement industry. Under the leadership of the next generation, including sons Yadu Hari and the late Jai Hari Dalmia, and grandsons Puneet and Gautam Dalmia, the company has continued to grow. Today, Dalmia Bharat is the fourth-largest cement manufacturer in India, operating 15 plants across the country. A core part of its modern identity is a focus on sustainability, with a public commitment to become carbon negative by 2040 and to utilize 100% renewable power by 2030, positioning it as one of the most efficient cement companies globally.
