Cyrium Technologies
Fabless concentrator photovoltaic (cpv) cell manufacturer
About Cyrium Technologies
Based in Ottawa, Canada, Cyrium Technologies was a developer of solar cells that used semiconductor equipment to convert light energy directly into electricity. The company was founded in 2002 by Simon Fafard, who also served as the Chief Technology Officer. Cyrium operated on a fabless manufacturing model, focusing on the design and development of its proprietary technology while outsourcing the actual production.
The company's core business revolved around manufacturing fabless concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) cells for the terrestrial solar energy market. These cells were designed for applications that use concentrated sunlight on a small area to generate electricity. The primary target clients for Cyrium were CPV system manufacturers. Its business model was centered on supplying these manufacturers with high-performance solar cells that could lower the overall cost of ownership for their customers.
Cyrium's flagship product line was the QDEC (Quantum Dot Enhanced Cell), a high-efficiency multi-junction CPV cell. This product was based on the company's patented nanotechnology using quantum dots to enhance cell performance. The QDEC cells boasted average efficiency levels of 40% at concentrations greater than 500-1000 suns. A key benefit was the sustained performance and minimal degradation even at high illuminations. This technology was intended to make large-scale power generation through CPV systems more commercially viable. A significant milestone was the opening of a 200 KW HCPV (high concentrating photovoltaic) power station in Qingdao, China, in 2011, which utilized Cyrium's QDEC cells.
Throughout its operation, Cyrium secured significant venture capital funding. The company's first venture capital funding was in 2004. It raised a total of $21 million over four rounds, including a Series B round of $15 million in July 2008. Key investors included Quercus Trust, Chrysalis Ventures, Pangaea Ventures, and BDC Venture Capital. Despite its technological advancements and market entries, the company eventually ceased operations.
