About Cygnifi
Cygnifi was a financial technology company established as a spin-off from J.P. Morgan in February 2000. The firm was created to deliver an array of derivatives-related services through web-based channels. Its core business involved providing applications for derivatives pricing, portfolio valuation, credit risk management, and collateral management. The target clientele included bank treasurers, traders, asset managers, and corporate treasurers.
Originally, J.P. Morgan planned to launch Cygnifi as an independent entity, forming strategic partnerships with Sybase, NumeriX Corporation, and Bridge Information Systems to bolster its technology and data offerings. In August 2000, Cygnifi secured $23.3 million in a Series A funding round from investors including LabMorgan (J.P. Morgan's venture capital arm), Sybase, Numerix, and Bridge Information Systems. The company's intellectual property, which was based on seven years of development at J.P. Morgan, was valued at $42 million at its inception.
The company's product suite was extensive, featuring the Cygnifi Analytics Library (ALib), a foundational component for valuing and managing risk for fixed-income derivatives. Other significant products included 'Kapital', a portfolio and risk management application; 'Aladdin', a spreadsheet-based pricing tool; 'Sampras', for monitoring counterparty credit exposure; and 'Blue Derivatives Pricer', a valuation application. These tools were designed to be interoperable with various programming environments like C/C++, Java, and Visual Basic.
However, Cygnifi faced financial difficulties and, after failing to secure a second round of funding, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2001. Subsequently, the company's intellectual property assets were acquired by other firms. In early 2003, MB Risk Management (MBRM) purchased the rights to Cygnifi's entire software portfolio. Separately, Suite, LLC, a financial technology firm, also acquired a significant catalogue of the JPMorgan/Cygnifi technology, including the analytics library, which it then enhanced and offered to its own clients with source code and customization services. One of Suite's managing partners was Gerard Galluscio, and the firm later appointed Dr. Gene Schupak, former Head of Derivatives Research at Cygnifi, as its Head of Quantitative Research and Development.
