About Cygnal Integrated Products

Cygnal Integrated Products, Inc. operated as a fabless semiconductor company, specializing in the design and marketing of field-programmable, mixed-signal System-on-Chip (SoC) products. Founded in March 1999 by Derrell C. Coker, the Austin, Texas-based firm carved out a niche in the market for analog-intensive, highly integrated 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs). The company's business model revolved around providing these SoCs and associated support tools to a broad range of markets, including industrial automation, automotive controls, medical instrumentation, and electronic test equipment.

Cygnal's core product was the C8051F family of MCUs, which integrated high-performance analog capabilities, an 8051 core, flash memory, and programmable communication interfaces onto a single chip. This integration offered clients tangible benefits such as higher component density, increased design flexibility, and a quicker time-to-market for their own end-products. The company's product portfolio grew to include over 50 general-purpose products. A key strategic move was the acquisition of SiLogiX, LLC in September 2000, which enhanced Cygnal's high-speed processor design capabilities by bringing a high-performance 8051-compatible core in-house.

The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by Silicon Laboratories Inc. (now Silicon Labs) in a deal announced in September 2003 and completed in December of that year. Silicon Labs acquired Cygnal in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $59.2 million to broaden its own product line of mixed-signal ICs. At the time of the acquisition agreement, Cygnal had 62 employees and had achieved revenues of $5.2 million in 2002. Following the acquisition, Cygnal's operations were relocated to Silicon Laboratories' facilities, and its products were integrated into the Silicon Labs portfolio.
