Cybiko
And markets internet wireless entertainment and personal communications equipment
About Cybiko
Cybiko Inc. emerged in 1999 as a venture by Russian entrepreneur David Yang, who also founded ABBYY Software House. The company was established to address a perceived gap in the market for a teen-focused digital communication and entertainment device, a concept born from social research across six countries. Yang, an inventor from a young age, utilized personal funds and investment from his father and ABBYY to develop the Cybiko handheld. The core of the company's operations, including engineering and design, was based in Moscow, a strategic choice that significantly lowered development costs.
The firm’s principal product was a handheld device, a hybrid between a personal digital assistant (PDA) and a gaming console, designed specifically for teenagers. The business model centered on the sale of this hardware, complemented by a large library of over 430 free, downloadable games and applications. Cybiko's flagship product, the “Cybiko Classic,” launched with a test market in New York in April 2000, followed by a nationwide rollout in May 2000. A key feature was its proprietary two-way radio text messaging system, which allowed devices to communicate directly with each other within a range of up to 100-300 meters, creating ad-hoc wireless chatrooms without needing a central network. This functionality was a precursor to modern location-based social networking. The device featured a QWERTY keyboard, a 160x100 grayscale LCD, and an expansion slot for add-ons like an MP3 player.
Cybiko achieved initial market traction, selling over 500,000 units of the Classic model by the end of 2000. In 2001, the company released an upgraded version, the “Cybiko Xtreme,” which boasted a faster processor, more memory, and a microphone. However, the company faced significant headwinds. The rise of more affordable internet-capable mobile phones provided stiff competition. The business was also impacted by the dot-com crash of the early 2000s, which stifled further investment, and the cancellation of a planned London launch following the September 11 attacks compounded its financial difficulties. Ultimately, after two product versions, the company ceased manufacturing and was acquired by In-Fusio in November 2003.
