About Curocell
Curocell Inc. is a South Korean clinical-stage biotechnology company established in 2016, specializing in the development of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies for cancer treatment. Founded by Gunsoo Kim (CEO), Chan Hyuk Kim (CTO), and Hyunbo Shim (CSO), the company has positioned itself as a key player in the Korean immunotherapy landscape. Curocell is a publicly-traded entity on the KOSDAQ market under the ticker 372320. The company's financial model is centered on the research, development, and eventual commercialization of its therapeutic products. It has successfully raised significant capital, including a total of $82.4M over four funding rounds, to finance its clinical trials and infrastructure development.
The company's core business revolves around creating advanced cancer treatments by genetically engineering a patient's own T-cells to effectively identify and destroy cancer cells. Curocell's main client base consists of patients with relapsed or refractory cancers who have exhausted conventional treatment options. A pivotal component of Curocell's product portfolio is its proprietary OVIS™ (Overcome Immune Suppression) technology. This platform enhances the anti-tumor activity of CAR-T cells by simultaneously inhibiting two immune checkpoint receptors, PD-1 and TIGIT, which are known to cause CAR-T cell exhaustion. By downregulating these receptors, OVIS™ aims to improve the persistence and effectiveness of the therapy compared to conventional CAR-T treatments.
Curocell's lead product candidate is Anbal-cel (anbalcabtagene autoleucel), also known as Limkato, a CD19-targeting CAR-T therapy. In November 2023, the company completed a Phase 2 clinical trial for Anbal-cel in patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a common type of blood cancer. The trial demonstrated a high complete response rate, and Curocell has since submitted a biologics license application to Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, anticipating commercial launch in 2025. The company is also expanding Anbal-cel's applications, having received approval for a Phase 2 trial in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and a Phase 1/2 trial for the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Beyond Anbal-cel, Curocell is developing 'Hyperkine,' a next-generation platform to tackle solid tumors, and an allogeneic (off-the-shelf) CAR-T therapy for peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). To support its ambitions, Curocell has established a large-scale GMP facility in South Korea dedicated to CAR-T production.
