About Curacyte

Curacyte AG was a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Munich, Germany, established in 2000 with a focus on developing new therapeutics for the acute and critical care markets. The company's activities included the research, development, manufacturing, and sale of novel biotechnological and biochemical preparations. A significant milestone occurred in June 2002, when Curacyte AG merged with VitaResc Biotech AG, consolidating their portfolios to strengthen their position in the market. This merger diversified the company's risk across different therapeutic areas and combined products in all phases of pharmaceutical development.

The company's lead product was Hemoximer (also known as PHP or Pyridoxalated Hemoglobin Polyoxyethylene), a nitric oxide scavenger designed to treat distributive shock, a condition characterized by vasodilation and hypotension. Hemoximer advanced to a pivotal Phase III clinical trial for patients with catecholamine-resistant distributive shock. It was also explored as a supportive therapy for cancer patients undergoing high-dose interleukin-2 treatment, which often induces shock as a side effect. In addition to its primary focus, Curacyte held a portfolio that included therapies for hematology and antithrombosis.

In August 2008, Curacyte sold its wholly-owned subsidiary, Curacyte Discovery GmbH, to The Medicines Company for an initial payment of €14.5 million. This subsidiary was concentrated on developing synthetic serine protease inhibitors for hemostasis and anti-coagulation, including a lead candidate, CU-2010, for preventing surgical blood loss. The sale allowed Curacyte AG to concentrate its resources on the Phase III trial of Hemoximer. Over its operational years, Curacyte raised significant capital, including a Series C funding round of $38 million in February 2005 from investors like AlpInvest Partners, TVM, and Thuja Capital. However, after the pivotal Phase III trial for Hemoximer was terminated due to futility, the company ceased its drug development efforts and is no longer in business.
