Cuorips Inc. is a Japanese biotechnology firm centered on the development and commercialization of regenerative medical products, particularly for cardiac diseases. The company was established in March 2017 as a spin-off venture from Osaka University, building upon the foundational research of Professor Yoshiki Sawa, a distinguished figure in cardiovascular surgery and regenerative medicine. Professor Sawa, now the Chief Technology Officer, has been a pivotal force in the company's scientific direction, leveraging years of research in cell-based therapies for heart failure. The company is led by President and CEO Takayuki Kusanagi.

The core of Cuorips' business is its human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived cardiomyocyte sheet. This product is an allogeneic cell therapy designed for patients with severe heart failure, a condition with limited treatment options beyond heart transplants or artificial hearts. The therapy involves transplanting a thin sheet composed of heart muscle cells, which have been differentiated from iPS cells, onto the surface of a patient's heart. This procedure is minimally invasive and aims to improve cardiac function through two main mechanisms: paracrine signaling, where the patch releases substances to promote the formation of new blood vessels, and electrical integration, where the transplanted cells contract in unison with the host's heart, providing mechanical support. Clinical trials have shown promising results in improving patient symptoms.

Cuorips operates on a hybrid business model. Its primary focus is the commercialization of its regenerative products, which represents a high-growth but high-risk area. To create a more stable revenue stream and mitigate early-stage financial risks, the company also engages in a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) business. This division utilizes its proprietary cell culture and processing facility, CLiC-1, to offer services to other pharmaceutical companies and research institutions. Having listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market on June 27, 2023, the company has secured capital for further development and commercialization efforts. Cuorips collaborates extensively with academic institutions like Osaka and Kyoto Universities and has formed strategic partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies, such as Daiichi Sankyo, to advance its research and global commercialization plans.
