About Cuil

Cuil, Inc. operated as a search engine that emerged with the ambitious goal of outperforming established market players by offering a larger web index and a different approach to result presentation. Launched on July 28, 2008, the company was founded by a team of former Google engineers and academics, including the husband-and-wife duo Anna Patterson and Tom Costello, along with Russell Power. Patterson was a significant architect of Google's large search index, TeraGoogle, while Costello brought research experience from Stanford University and IBM. Their combined expertise was aimed at tackling the exponential growth of the internet, which they believed existing search engines were failing to index adequately.

Cuil's business model was centered on providing a search service that analyzed the content and context of web pages rather than relying on popularity metrics like link analysis and traffic rankings. The service aimed to organize search results by ideas, grouping similar pages into categories and presenting them in a magazine-style layout with thumbnail images to help users distinguish between topics. A key differentiator was its stated commitment to user privacy, claiming it would not store users' search activities or IP addresses. The company secured $33 million in venture capital to support its operations.

Upon launch, Cuil claimed to have an index of over 120 billion web pages, which was reportedly three times larger than Google's at the time. Despite the initial hype and a significant traffic spike, the platform struggled to gain sustained traction. Users and critics pointed to slow performance, irrelevant search results, and inaccurate image associations. The combination of high expectations and poor initial performance damaged the engine's credibility. After a failed acquisition agreement, Cuil's servers were shut down on September 17, 2010, just over two years after its launch. Following the closure, its patents were sold to Google, and Anna Patterson returned to work at the search giant.
