Creator, initially known as Momentum Machines, was established in 2009 by Alexandros Vardakostas and Steve Frehn. The company aimed to address inefficiencies in the quick-service restaurant industry by developing advanced culinary automation. Vardakostas's background is deeply rooted in the food sector, having grown up working in his family's Southern California burger restaurant. This firsthand experience with the repetitive nature of fast-food preparation inspired him to pursue a solution after studying physics. He built the first prototype in his parents' garage before meeting Frehn, a mechanical engineer with experience at NASA and Tesla, who became a co-founder.

The business operates in the food technology and fast-casual dining markets, targeting consumers seeking high-quality, customizable meals at an affordable price point. Its primary offering was a gourmet burger prepared by a proprietary robotic system, which handled the entire process from grinding the meat to order, slicing fresh toppings, and assembling the burger. This automation allowed the company to allocate more of its budget toward premium, sustainably sourced ingredients while keeping prices competitive, with burgers priced around $6. Revenue was generated directly from the sale of food and beverages at its restaurant locations.

The company's core product was its 14-foot-long burger-making machine, a sophisticated culinary instrument featuring hundreds of sensors and dozens of computers.
