About Corventis

Corventis, founded in 2007 and headquartered in San Jose, California, specialized in wireless cardiovascular monitoring solutions before its acquisition by Medtronic in 2014. The company was a venture-backed entity, with investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mohr Davidow Ventures, PTV Ventures, and DAG Ventures.

The core of Corventis' business was developing and marketing wearable sensor technology for remote patient monitoring, primarily serving clinicians and hospitals focused on cardiac health. Its business model involved providing these monitoring systems to healthcare providers, who could then bill services to patients with Medicare following a 2010 approval from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services.

Corventis developed a portfolio of products centered around its PiiX wearable platform. One of its key products was the NUVANT Mobile Cardiac Telemetry (MCT) System, which received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2010. This system featured a small, water-proof, adhesive patch worn on the chest to continuously monitor patients for up to 30 days. The PiiX sensor within the NUVANT system could track heart rate, respiratory rate, fluid status, and patient activity, transmitting data wirelessly via a handheld device called zLink to the Corventis Monitoring Center. This enabled real-time analysis by technicians and provided physicians with reports to diagnose cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, in ambulatory patients. Another product, the AVIVO Mobile Patient Management System, also utilized the PiiX sensor to provide insights into the health of patients with conditions like heart failure.

In June 2014, medical device giant Medtronic confirmed its acquisition of Corventis for a reported sum of around $150 million. Medtronic had previously partnered with Corventis in the development of its monitoring patch technology. The acquisition was seen as a strategic move to integrate Corventis's wearable sensor technology into Medtronic's existing remote patient monitoring and disease management business, specifically its Cardiocom unit.
