About CoreTrace

CoreTrace Corporation was a cybersecurity firm founded by Chris Ney in 2007, operating out of Austin, Texas. The company specialized in endpoint security and developed solutions to protect physical and virtual Windows servers, desktops, and laptops, as well as Linux enterprise servers.

The firm's core business was providing advanced threat protection through its flagship product, CoreTrace Bouncer. This software utilized adaptive application whitelisting, a security method that prevents any unauthorized code from executing. Bouncer was designed to neutralize sophisticated cyber threats, including malware, zero-day attacks, and memory-based exploits like buffer overflows. Its key features included memory protection to prevent the exploitation of whitelisted applications and risk-profiling of all applications through cloud-based reputation services. The business model centered on selling licenses for its Bouncer software, with pricing starting at $35 per endpoint.

Throughout its operation, CoreTrace raised a total of $20.4 million in funding over six rounds from institutional investors, including Venrock, Covera Ventures, and Globalscape. The company's journey culminated in November 2012 when it was acquired by Lumension Security, a global provider of endpoint management and security solutions. The acquisition was an asset deal, transferring CoreTrace's intellectual property, patent portfolio, key development staff, and over 130 customers to Lumension. Lumension planned to integrate CoreTrace's technology into its own application control products while continuing to support existing CoreTrace customers and sell the Bouncer product.
