Coolest Cooler
Bring the party with a cooler that's cooler
About Coolest Cooler
Coolest Cooler emerged as a sensation on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in 2014, quickly becoming one of its most-funded campaigns. The venture was orchestrated by Ryan Grepper, a product developer from Portland, Oregon, who envisioned a multi-functional cooler for outdoor enthusiasts. Grepper's background involved a passion for invention, having previously created items like a Jell-O shot catapult and a gas-powered blender, which was a precursor to the Coolest Cooler concept. After an initial unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign in late 2013, Grepper relaunched in the summer of 2014 with improved marketing, raising over $13.2 million from more than 62,000 backers.
The business operated on a direct-to-consumer model, initially funded by Kickstarter pledges from individuals who were essentially pre-ordering the product. The core of the business was a 55-quart, feature-rich cooler. Its main attraction was an integrated, battery-powered, ice-crushing blender. The product also included a removable, water-resistant Bluetooth speaker, a USB charging port, an LED light inside the lid, a bottle opener with a magnetic cap catch, and built-in storage for plates and a knife. A removable divider inside the cooler could also be used as a cutting board. The entire unit was designed for portability, with rugged wheels and a telescoping handle.
Despite the massive initial funding, the company faced significant operational hurdles. The sheer volume of orders forced a shift to manufacturing in China, leading to unexpected complexities in production, logistics, and certification processes. These issues caused significant production delays and increased costs. To generate necessary operating capital, the company made the controversial decision to sell coolers on Amazon at a retail price of around $400-$500 before all Kickstarter backers had received their units, which had been pledged at around $185. This move created considerable frustration among the initial supporters. Ultimately, the company could not overcome its financial difficulties, which were exacerbated by a 25% tariff on Chinese imports. In December 2019, after a five-year struggle that included an investigation by the Oregon Department of Justice, Coolest Cooler announced it was ceasing operations. The closure left approximately 20,000 of the original backers without the cooler they had helped fund, cementing its legacy as a prominent cautionary tale in the world of crowdfunding.
